The Oakley Community Gardens are almost here, but we need you to help make it happen!

The following message went out April 3rd 2014 to the Gardens Membership:

You're receiving this because you've attended an Oakley Community Gardens and Farm Taskforce meeting, or otherwise expressed an interest in the formation of the Oakley Community Gardens. As we finalize negotiations with the city, Slow Food, the school district, etc. we need your help!

There is a critical need for funds to secure insurance and materials, committed gardeners, and volunteers. We need and value your ideas and efforts!

If all goes well, we may be ready to start planting in early May! So it would be a good idea to start some seeds at home.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1) We want you as a member of the Community of Oakley Gardeners, but if you don't want to receive future emails the most effective way would be to send a message through the website and also click the 'unsubscribe' link below.

2) Please sign the Garden Plots waiting list, the Farm Volunteers list, or both! Those interested in having a Garden Plot should review the proposed rules and regulations, or "Code of Conduct", and present us with your questions and recommendations.

3) Visit our new website, catch up on what's been going on, and let us know what needs to be fixed. (You can also find some of us on facebook.)

4) Volunteer to assist with soliciting donations, construction, administration, or whatever else you're interested in.

IMPORTANT DATES:

April 5th -12th - Volunteers needed to do outreach at the various Oakley Science Week activities.

April 12th - We need volunteers to staff an information booth at the Friends of Oakley Library 5k 10k fundraiser.

“Community gardens have the potential to foster a sense of community identity, ownership and stewardship.  They can provide a place for people of diverse backgrounds to interact, share cultural traditions and exchange knowledge related to gardening, cooking, nutrition and health. I find gardening a great way to level the stress in life, ripping weeds out of the ground can be a cathartic experience.”

- Mayor Kevin Romick.

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul".

— Alfred Austin
