Celebrating a Full Year of Community Gardening in Oakley

It's hard to believe that it's been more than a year since we began planting at the Moura Property.... on the other hand, with all the changes and growth, sometimes it seems like it's been much longer! The transformation at our new location within Creekside park over the past 5 months has been nothing short of remarkable.

We haven't tried to keep track, but it's safe to say that hundreds of pounds of food have been harvested by our plotholders in the past few months, and have been enjoyed by our families and friends. Some has also been shared at the senior center and elsewhere.

We'd once again like to express our thanks to everyone involved in getting this project started, and all of our sponsors, plotholders and committee members past and present! It has truly been a community endeavor. We are very appreciative of the efforts and support of the Oakley City Council and Staff.

The Oakley Press published an update article August 27th which you can read by clicking here: http://www.thepress.net/news/oakley-community-gardens-taking-root/article_758131e2-4ce4-11e5-b909-af517b49b9a8.html

For our readers who are not yet plotholders, if you'd like to put your name on the waiting list, you can email oakleycommunitygardens (also please sign up for our mailing list and "like" our facebook page, if you haven't already.)

Upcoming Events:

It was decided by the membership at our last meeting to make our workdays a regularly scheduled event, to make it easier to keep our calendars straight. To that end, plotholders and other volunteers can expect that we will generally have workdays on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.. This month's will be September 12th, during which we'll be trellising a couple grape vines and working some more on the pathways through the garden.

We hope to see many of you at our booth at the Heart of Oakley Festival, which will be held on Saturday September 19th from 11 a,m, -5 p.m. (setup starts at 9am if you're available to help...give Shawn a call or email.)

There won't be a garden workshop this month, since it was felt that the Heart of Oakley Festival takes precedence. In October we will be making our own stepping stones.

“Community gardens have the potential to foster a sense of community identity, ownership and stewardship.  They can provide a place for people of diverse backgrounds to interact, share cultural traditions and exchange knowledge related to gardening, cooking, nutrition and health. I find gardening a great way to level the stress in life, ripping weeds out of the ground can be a cathartic experience.”

- Mayor Kevin Romick.

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul".

— Alfred Austin
