June 9, 2014 Press Release
Oakley Community Garden & Moura Farm Benefit
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
06-09-14 900AM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oakley, CA – Come join us to celebrate Oakley City Council’s approval to lease out City land to the Oakley Community Garden & Moura Farm! We’re having a benefit for our project:
Kim Buccholz, owner of Providence Bar & Eatery will contribute a portion of the proceeds from food and drink sales; 3pm until closing Friday, June 27. Family-friendly fun begins at 3pm followed by live music from 6pm-12am, to aid the transformation of the Moura Property into a celebration of Oakley's historical Agricultural Roots including interactive gardens, a community farm, trails and more.
The City of Oakley recently approved the Community Gardens and Moura Farm project at the former YMCA property on O'Hara Ave., between O'Hara Park Middle School and the De Anza Trail, lending itself to inclusive and unique expansion, provided we wow the city...and we will!
The Council has been very careful about accepting a proposal for the property, but in a highly unprecedented move, Oakley unanimously agreed on a project that promises to nurture an expansive health and well-being atmosphere to pre-accommodate a highly anticipated Community Center, the parameters of which were laid out by Oakley residents decades ago.
We are driven by our commitment to deliver a project which allows families to rent plots to garden with one another AND a farm project which will deliver healthy, locally grown produce to residents in need such as Veterans, disabled/low income families, seniors on fixed incomes, food banks, homeless shelters, etc.
“We are grateful to Providence Bar and Eatery for supporting us and partnering with us for this event”, states founding member and fundraising coordinator Julie Vazquez. The Oakley Community Gardens/Moura Farm, a project of Slow Food Delta Diablo, are so excited to have a community garden and farm for our residents.
“We need money to get this project off the ground and to do it with the class that we'd expect for Oakley recreational sites, ”
“Oakley deserves a dynamic public project that we all can be proud of,” Moura Farm co-manager Kaitlin Abbruzzi states. “This project has so much to offer the residents of Oakley, in the form of a safe and friendly community gathering space AND also work experience, in the form of outdoor recreational activities, while providing access to healthy, organic food for those who can least afford it.
“Growing food supplies locally promotes, and actually demonstrates, sustainable action-oriented ways to unite the residents of Oakley in a common goal, which will benefit the whole community.”
There will be fun activities and an art contest for the kids! Art supplies will be provided.
Come and join us for food, drink, and live music - enjoy two local bands & dance the night away:
The Blues Barrens [Blues and fusion]
Loose Gravel [Classic Rock]
